The head of the Central Office is appointed by the Ministry of Justice of Baden-Württemberg in consultation with the other Land Judicial Authorities.
The current head of the Office is the Senior Public Prosecutor Thomas Will.
His predecessors were
Erwin Schüle (from December 1958 to August 1966),
Adalbert Rückerl (from September 1966 to May 1984),
Alfred Streim (from June 1984 to August 1996),
Wilhelm Dreßen (from August 1996 temporarily at first, then from
June 1997 to August 2000),
Kurt Schrimm (from September 2000 to September 2015) and
Jens Rommel (from October 2015 to February 2020).
